Philip V gold 8 Escudos 1738 S-PJ AU55 PCGS, Seville mint, KM346.2, Cal-2314 (prev. Cal-205), Onza-537 (Very Rare). The classically challenging final date for the denomination from this mint, and one which analysis of past sales records and the certified population confirms to be of the utmost desirability. Missing from both the Eliasberg Collection and B. Max Mehl's 1943 sale of the Thomas W. Voetter Collection, this is only the second example of the date we have presented, and one of around five we have been able to locate coming to market in the last several decades. What is more, census data from both NGC and PCGS reveals the present offering to be the single finest yet graded, the next highest ranking a full five grade points lower at NGC. Despite clear rub atop the devices confirming the designation, the devices showcase a care of execution that immediately stands out--from the rivets and individual plates in Philip's armor to the clear, lustrous sheen cloaking the marginal features.
