The "F" in the reverse legend of this piece shows a "hook" at the bottom left, which can also be found on denarii of Pescennius Niger. The die cutter of the present piece likely already cut dies for Pescennius Niger, either in Antioch or in a mobile mint. Bickford-Smith (RIN XLVI, 1994/1995) suggests a camp mint accompanying the army of Septimius Severus in Asia Minor, in preparation for the battle with Pescennius Niger, challenging the traditional location of the mint in Emesa.
