SICILY. Syracuse. Time of Dionysius I (405-367 BC). AR tetradrachm (27mm, 16.73 gm, 2h). NGC XF 5/5 - 2/5, Fine Style, scratches, edge marks. Unsigned dies in the style of Eucleidas, ca. 400/395-390 BC. Charioteer driving unruly quadriga left, kentron in right hand, reins in both; Nike flying right above, crowning charioteer with wreath held in both hands, dolphin left in exergue / ΣY-PAK-OΣ-IΩN, head of Arethusa left, hair in wide ampyxes, upswept at temple and flying loosely upward behind, wearing double-loop earring and plain necklace with frontal pendant; four dolphins swimming around. HGC 2, 1345. Tudeer 70, 101. SNG ANS 299. Nicely centered on tight flan. Gunmetal cabinet toning with light rainbow hues.
