Ancients
Augustus (27 BC-AD 14). AR cistophorus (26mm, 11.95 gm, 12h). NGC Choice AU★ 5/5 - 4/5, Fine Style. Pergamum, soon after 27 BC. IMP•CAESAR, bare head of Augustus right / AVGVSTVS, lactating gynosphinx seated right. RIC I 527. RPC I 2204. Sutherland Group II (uncertain mint). Stunningly attractive example of this scarce and extremely popular issue. Toned flan with lovely coppery highlights.
The striking reverse type depicts a gynosphinx, a mythological creature with a female human head and leonine body, modeled after the Egyptian androsphinx, which was wingless and male. This image was initially used by Augustus as his personal signet, but was later replaced with the head of Alexander the Great.
