Tranquillina (AD 241-244). AR denarius (21mm, 2.73 gm, 1h). NGC Choice AU 5/5 - 4/5. Rome, special emission for marriage of Gordian III and Tranquillina, AD 241. SABINIA TRANQVILLINA AVG, draped bust of Tranquillina right, seen from front, wearing stephane, hair weaved in straight lines and rows with long plait carried up the back of head / CONCORDIA AVGG, Gordian III (on left), standing facing, head right, roll in left hand, clasping right hands with Tranquillina (on right), standing facing, veiled head left. RIC IV.III (Gordian III) -, cf. 250 (antoninianus). Exceptionally attractive portrait of this inexplicably rare empress. Enchanting, storm cloud toned surfaces. Gorgeous coin in hand and the first example of a Roman Imperial issue we have had the pleasure of offering from Tranquillina.

Gordian III was one of a series of "boy emperors" who nominally reigned during the chaotic mid-third century AD. The grandson of Gordian I, he was proclaimed Caesar after the collapse of his grandfather's abortive 21-day reign during the "Year of the Six Emperors" in AD 238, and sole emperor after the Praetorians murdered the Senate-appointed duo of Balbinus and Pupienus in July of that year. Due to his youth and inexperience, Gordian was at first dominated by an advisory board of senators, who had to walk a tightrope to avoid the fate of the previous short-lived regimes. In AD 241, Gordian appointed as Praetorian Prefect the capable Gaius Furius Sabinius Aquila Timesitheus, whose daughter, Tranquillina, became his bride. Timesitheus became a beneficent mentor who kept Gordian's weak government on an even keel, until he died of a suspicious illness in early AD 244, after a major victory over the Persians. Gordian III died shortly later, after which Tranquillina disappears from history.
