The exarch of Carthage, Heraclius the Elder, together with his son, Heraclius the Younger, rebelled in AD 608 against the Byzantine emperor Phocas. Niketas, Heraclius's nephew, colluded with the rebel forces to seize Egypt. Heraclius the Younger moved from Carthage to Sicily, then to Cyprus to launch his successful attack on Constantinople in AD 610 to become emperor himself and execute the unpopular Phocas.
