Archduke Leopold V Klippe 3 Taler ND (1635) MS60 NGC, Hall mint, KM649 (Rare), Dav-A3331, cf. Moser-Tursky-pg. 275, Fig. 487 (for standard, non-Klippe 2 Taler issue). 85.33gm. Posthumous issue under Claudia von Medici, regent of Tyrol from 1632 to 1646, to commemorate her wedding to Leopold on April 19, 1626, in Innsbruck. Quite a bit scarcer than the already rare Klippe 2 Taler of this vintage, offered in our Paramount Collection sale in March, and undeniably finer as well, certified Mint State with no conditional qualifiers. An enticing issue to say the least, demonstrating even steel surfaces laying host to the lavishly struck and sensitively rendered double-portrait of Leopold and Claudia, their regal regalia meticulously engraved and displaying not a hint of weakness. The square Klippe exhibits minor waviness while the surfaces yield scattered fissures and wisps consistent with light handling, all noted for the sake of completeness. This seldom-seen Klippe type is expected to draw significant interest and command bids consistent with this fact.
