British East Africa
British Colony. Victoria gold Proof "Restrike" Pice 1899 PR64 Cameo NGC, cf. KM-Pn5, Fr-Unl. 10.45gm. An exquisite and almost certainly unique gold off-metal striking of this typically bronze denomination, very likely produced from the original dies (see our auction #3020, September 2012, lot 23711), although with next to no evidence of die rust. Even, parallel die polish lines stud the fields over obverse and reverse alike, coupling with a captivating depth of mirrored reflectivity to produce an appearance of ultra-high quality. Knowing King Farouk's predilection for having foreign mints strike off-metal pieces specifically for him, it most likely seems that this is the reason behind NGC's designation of the offering as a "restrike," though the Standard Catalog of World Coins calls it a Pattern. The fact no major collections of world gold coins or British colonial issues included either another specimen or this specific coin--not Pittman, Hammel, Pridmore, Diana, Vice, nor Storck--speaks strongly to the current sale being the selection's first offering at public auction since Sotheby's sale of the Farouk Collection in 1954. As such, an absolutely unmissable opportunity for even the most seasoned expert of the series. Sold with old dealer tags.
Purchased from M. Louis Teller; Farouk Collection (Sotheby's February 1954, Lot 864)
