Republic aluminum-bronze Proof Essai 100 Francs 1914-A PR66 NGC, Paris mint, KM-Unl., Maz-2113 (R3), VG-4800. Plain edge. A very rarely seen aluminum-bronze Essai strike for the 1914 100 Francs, the regular production series issue of which the Standard Catalog of World Coins simply classifies as "No known examples exist." This fleeting issue, then, may be the closest thing that collectors can come to realizing a 1914-dated example of this base type. What elevates the offering, aside from the rarity of its type, is its stunning gem preservation. The representative at hand ranks as the sole example seen by NGC. While PCGS has encountered 7 Specimen-certified examples, none match the technical quality of this superb selection, which exhibits fully rendered features and pristine luster, essentially undisturbed by contact or handling.
