Edward III (1327-1377) gold Noble ND (1351-1352) MS64 NGC, Tower mint, Cross 1 mm, Pre-Treaty Period, Series C, S-1486, N-1144, Schneider-18 var. (punctuation). 7.68gm. Є | DWΛRD' • DЄI • GRA • RЄX • AИGL' • Ƶ • FRAИC' • D • hyB' (annulet stops), crowned, armored figure of Edward standing facing in ship, sword in right hand, shield in left / +IhC • ΛVTЄm • TRAИCIЄИS • P (barred) • mЄDIVm • ILLORVm • IBAT (annulet stops), large floriate cross with Є at center, crowned lions in angles, all within polylobe with trefoils in spandrels. An exceptional example of this short-lived Noble subtype, standing alongside one other specimen as the finest certified at NGC, the next highest being an MS62. Only mildly muted by a micro-fine stippling in the fields, the luster of the coin still remains identifiably pervasive, with the whole of the dies captured by a broad, full flan free of evidence of bending or waviness. What perhaps testifies even more to the selection's high-quality production standards, however, is a complete lack of serious doubling or die shifts within the legends, resulting in easy legibility even at an arm's length. Very nearly gem, and a thoroughly stand-out specimen.
