Great Britain
Richard II gold Noble ND (1377-1399) MS63 NGC, Tower mint, Cross Patteé mm, Type 1b, S-1654, N-1302, Schneider-133. 7.72gm. RIC | ΛRD x DI: G: RЄX: ΛnGL' x Z (retrograde): FRΛnC' x D: hIB' x Z (retrograde) x ΛQ' (saltire and double saltire stops), crowned, armored figure of Richard standing facing in ship, sword in right hand, shield in left / +IhC: ΛVTЄm: TRΛnSIЄnS: PЄR: mЄDIV: ILLOR IBΛT (saltire and double saltire stops), R at center of large floriate cross with crowned lions in angles, all within polylobe with trefoils in spandrels. A remarkably challenging piece in Choice Mint State, much more commonly found in heavily circulated states often with severe bending to the flan. Though admittedly struck mildly off-center, the detail of the devices more than merits its top-pop designation from NGC (only a single MS65 finer at PCGS), with Richard's face in particular maintaining a wonderful clarity. Interestingly, the reverse legend seems to show evidence of the end of the word ILLORVm having been erased from the die, a feature sure to pique the attention of the specialist.
