Great Britain
Richard II gold Noble ND (1377-1399) MS62 PCGS, Tower mint, Type IIIa, S-1656, N-1306 (R), Schneider-161. RIC | ΛRD x DI x GRΛ x RЄX x ΛnGL' x Z (retrograde): FRΛnC' x DnS' x hIB' Z (retrograde) x ΛQ (voided quatrefoil) T (saltire and double saltire stops), crowned, armored figure of Richard standing facing in ship, sword in right hand, shield in left / +IhC: ΛVTЄm: TRΛnSIЄnS: PЄR: mЄDIV' x ILLORVm: IBΛT (saltire and double saltire stops), R at center of large floriate cross with crowned lions in angles, all within polylobe with trefoils in spandrels. A very nearly choice specimen, and a rarer type from this monarch, nearly the entirety of the legends visible along the outer rims. Struck just mildly off-center from slightly rusty dies, this is one of only two Nobles of this type certified to date by PCGS, and is among a small handful we have had the privilege to offer. Interestingly, North does not record the French title on coins with Type III lettering.
