Edward IV (1st Reign, 1461-1470) gold Ryal ND (1464-1470) MS61 NGC, Tower mint, Crown mm, Light Coinage, S-1950, N-1549, Schneider-Unl. 7.66gm. ЄD | WΛRD' • DI • GRΛ' • RЄX • ΛnGL' • Z (retrograde) FRΛnC | • DnS I • B' (trefoil stops), crowned, armored figure of Edward standing facing in ship with large rose on hull, sword in right hand, shield in left / (crown) IhC' x ΛVT' (crescent) TRΛnSIЄn' x PЄR mЄDIVm: ILLORVm: IBΛT (saltire and double saltire stops), Rose in radiant sun over floriate cross, crowns and lions in angles, all within polylobe with large trefoils in spandrels. An attractive and well-struck piece that seems to instantly exceed its seemingly conservative assigned Mint State grade, with hardly a stray mark of meaningful consequence observable anywhere over the fields. An interesting subvariety missing the final S from TRΛnSIЄnS in the reverse legend, and one unrecorded in the Schneider Collection, which only contained varieties missing the final n.
