Great Britain
Richard III gold Angel ND (1483-1485) XF40 NGC, Tower mint, Boar's Head mm (BH2/BH1), S-2151, N-1676 var. (R; BH2/BH1-combination not listed), Schneider-Unl. 5.02gm. (boar's head) RICΛRD' x DI' x GRΛ' x RЄX ΛnGL x Z (retrograde) FRΛnC x (saltire stops), nimbate figure of St. Michael the Archangel with one foot on the dragon (Satan), spearing with cross-tipped staff / (boar's head) PЄR | CRVCЄ x TVΛ x SΛLVΛ x nOS x XPC' RЄDЄmP (saltire stops), cross-topped royal shield over ship, R-(rose) to either side above. A remarkably handsome Angel of this short-lived final king of the House of York, and a monarch whose coins come fiercely contested in all states of preservation. Typically, Richard's gold issues in particular are almost impossible to locate outside of lower grades, most having suffered from cleaning, tooling, puncturing, bending, if not outright heavy circulation. While rub does exist over the features in line with the certification, as the fine stippling of a rusty die pair textures the surfaces, the features still retain an appreciable level of detail, with minimal evidence of doubling detectable. Interestingly, the pairing of the boar's head mintmarks (BH2 obverse, BH1 reverse) is not recorded by North, and was also absent from the Schneider Collection. For the sake of accuracy, we note a few small scratches on the reverse.
