Great Britain
Elizabeth I (1558-1603) gold Pound ND (1600) AU55 PCGS, Tower mint, O mm, Sixth issue, S-2534, N-2008, Schneider-804. 11.26gm. (O) ELIZABETH • D' • G' • ANG' • FRA' • ET • HIB' • REGINA •, crowned and ruffled half-length bust of Elizabeth left / (O) SCVTVM • FIDEI • PROTEGET • EAM •, crowned Tudor shield flanked by E-R. A classic denomination of the Elizabethan Age, and one which calls to mind the power and aspirations of 16th-century England almost instantaneously. A coin which is always found in demand, with the collectors of the series knowing full well how difficult it can be to locate appreciable straight-graded examples, most having seen repair work. Completely free of any evidence of damage to the rims, this specimen exudes a charming red-gold tone that accents the marginal features, and only the lightest doubling noted in the reverse legends, which does nothing to impede their legibility. Usually the weakest area of the design, Elizabeth's portrait here shows a laudable expression of detail, and just a small die crack present on her cheek, not to be confused with damage. Sold with an old Baldwin's envelope.
