Great Britain
Commonwealth silver Pattern 6 Pence 1651 AU53 NGC, Sun mm, KM-Unl., ESC-219 (R5; prev. ESC-1499), N-2735 (VR). 21mm. 8.28gm. By David Ramage. Edge inscription: ★ TRUTH ★ AND ★ PEACE ★ 1651, between beaded border. A scarce Pattern issue struck on a thick, lettered edge planchet, meant by Ramage to prove earlier technology utilized by Briot and Mestrelle as superior to the French newcomer Pierre Blondeau's screw-press, only producing an estimated dozen 1/2 Crowns, Shillings, and 6 Pence of inferior quality in the same time as Blondeau's 300 visually impressive, consistent quality strikings. While examples had been included in the major collections of Brand, Montagu, and Murdoch, the specimen at hand appears much finer when compared to plated pieces, including those offered most recently in 2008 and 2010 by St. James and Dix Noonan Webb, respectively. The strike remains decisive on the thick planchet, lending to the impressively preserved features raised and fully apparent without a hint of weakness, the shields with Cross of St. George and Irish harp well-centered and framed by a beaded border and obverse/reverse legend reading "★ TRUTH ★ AND ★ PEACE." The slate patination evenly coats smooth, relatively mark-free fields making it evident the coin at hand saw virtually no use in circulation, its importance immediately recognized and relegated to a prestigious cabinet. Of paramount importance to the Commonwealth collector with only a small handful extant in private hands.
