Commonwealth silver Pattern Shilling 1651 MS63 NGC, Sun mm, KM-Unl., ESC-173 (R3; prev. ESC-1002), N-pg. 206. Milled edge. By Pierre Blondeau. A rare Pattern type whose indisputable scarcity is elevated to further heights by stellar choice preservation. The special care employed in the production of this piece is immediately palpable in hand, its features bold and lacking in any traces of the recurrent weakness that typifies the hammered circulation-series Shillings of the same issue. By similar comparison, the flan is nearly medallic, sleek in appearance and offering a hint of shimmering reflectivity against traces of accenting iridescent emerald and metallic tones that grip the devices. The offering ranks as the single-finest representative of this elusive issue seen by NGC, with the next-closest example certifying only AU53, and two others certifying only VF.
