Great Britain
Commonwealth silver Pattern 1/2 Crown 1651 MS62 NGC, Sun mm, KM-Unl., ESC-62 (R3; prev. ESC-443), N-2731 (R). 15.08gm. Edge inscription: IN THE THIRD YEARE OF FREEDOME BY GODS BLESSING RESTORED. An exceedingly scarce Pattern, and confirmed as such by the combined NGC and PCGS census data, showing just three examples certified; PCGS notes these as Proofs while NGC claims these to be business strikes, despite their Pattern designation. Obviously the work of talented engravers Simon and Blondeau, with their masterful composition and meticulous attention to detail made even more impressive by the fullness of strike, rendering every detail as intended. Only a small planchet imperfection to the right of the "5" digit as well as the occasional light mark can be noted, precluding this near-choice Pattern from finer designations. A deep and pervasive slate patination veils the glassy, low-lying fields, which are in direct contrast to the pearl-gray highlights of the raised features, lending to the superior visual appeal of the coin at hand. A treat to behold and certain to be a jewel for collectors of the Commonwealth series.
