Great Britain
James II gold 5 Guineas 1688 MS62 PCGS, KM460.1, S-3397A, Schneider-Unl. Second Bust. QVARTO edge. A stunning example of the 1688 5 Guineas, the second date of this only two-year type, and the same year in which the House of Stuart would be permanently toppled in the Glorious Revolution. Though this inspiring example was minted in an inarguably historic year, it is its exceptional preservation that propels it to the uppermost heights of desirability. Aside from reaching toward the peak of certification for the type to date (only a single MS63 certifies finer at PCGS), the offering's sublime orange-gold tone and radiant surfaces immediately evoke a sense of refined quality that one could rarely hope for from any large gold coinage of this era. The strike is full and elegant, matched by a vibrant sea of golden brilliance in the fields that unveils shimmering iridescence at a slant, while only insignificant friction in the fields acts to limit the technical designation from further heights. Needless to say, a fleeting opportunity to acquire such a magnificent example, the finest that we have yet encountered for this challenging issue.
