William III Proof Shilling 1698 PR62 NGC, cf. KM497.10 (unlisted in Proof), S-3511, ESC-1137 (R5; prev. ESC-1113). Third Bust. Plain edge. A very scarce late 17th-century Proof Shilling of the plain edge, third bust variety. Toned to a balanced graphite hue, with glistening silvery luster and iridescence expressed throughout the fields. The sharp strike of this specimen immediately reveals its special production, the detail in the legends and the reverse shield motifs exceedingly fine and rendered with pinpoint accuracy. As noted in English Silver Coinage, this particular variety contains notable die flaws to the reverse, distinguishing it from similar issues produced in 1698 and adjacent years. Mislabeled on the current holder insert as ESC-1115A (now ESC-1140), which is the Fourth Bust, "Flaming Hair" type.
