Great Britain
George I gold 5 Guineas 1726 AU50 PCGS, KM547, Fr-325, S-3626, Schneider-542. TERTIO edge. A challenging type that should inspire immediate attention amongst collectors on account of its impressive conditional survivorship, most having seen heavy-handed treatment if not outright post-mint mishandling. We would note, as a matter of fact, that not a single example has been awarded Mint State status at either of the major third-party grading services. Already captivating for its large-size format, the 5 Guineas of this date frequently benefit from another trademark not often found on 18th-century gold coins, that is, a bloom of red-gold to merlot tone that begins to encroach from the edges. Such can certainly be seen here, bolstered by a radiant ring of glassy texture along the legends that acts as an ideal framing device to the iconic central motifs. To date, just the third example of the date we have had the privilege to offer, and one which is sure to pique ample bidder interest.
