George III silver Proof Pattern "Three Graces" Crown 1817 PR62 PCGS, KM-PnA77, L&S-152, ESC-2020 (R2; prev. ESC-223). Plain edge. By William Wyon. A remarkable Pattern issue conceived by the renowned engraver, William Wyon, and one which continues to defy the effects of time to remain an enduring icon of British numismatics to this very day. Medallic in both the depth of its features and its careful attention to detail across intricate motifs, this fascinating type ranks among the most beautiful designs of the 19th century. A silty silver patina elevates this offering to a level beyond that which is implied by its grade, delicately laid upon the surfaces and easily obscuring any instances of handling that might otherwise be more apparent. The boldness of the features is accentuated by accents of glassy obsidian luster, which simultaneously frame the central motifs and shimmer throughout the legends, providing a crisp and balanced visual frame for the towering designs. Though finer examples may exist, it is difficult to imagine a more commendable visual presentation at this level of certification, positioning this offering as a clear contender for the advanced British series collector.
