Victoria gold Proof Sovereign 1839 PR66 Cameo NGC, KM736.1, S-3852, W&R-302 (R4), Marsh-23A (R). Plain edge. Medal alignment. By William Wyon. Stunning in every sense of the word, this conditional survivor should in all respects be regarded as a conditional outlier. The elite quality implied by the lofty NGC-assigned grade is immediately revealed in hand: full frost graces the well-chiseled portrait of the young Queen to yield a perfect obverse cameo contrast, a sublime orange-gold tone ignites within the legends and gradually gives way to pure aurous color toward the center, while a veritable sea of reflectivity dominates the open expanses, yielding clear mirroring to several inches. Indeed, the only features of note appear to be fine die polish lines in the fields, undisturbed and speaking to remarkable preservation, along with a single spot of tone at Victoria's jawline. The sheer visual splendor of this coin is bound to be perceived by all that witness it, and we would note that we have seen no conditionally comparable example in the last five and a half years.
