Victoria Proof Trade Dollar 1896-B PR63 NGC, Bombay mint, KM-T5, Prid-3A. A stunning Proof issue from this highly collectible series, one that has seen a significant increase in popularity of recent. 1896 Bombay-minted issues are rare in their own right in anything approaching Mint State, becoming increasingly difficult to source choice and finer for business strikes, and almost never encountered as a Proof. The shimmering, steely planchet hosts precisely rendered, raised motifs, yielding an incredible depth, embellished by an eye-catching undercurrent of amber with light cobalt piercing the denticles. A light haze veils instances of hairlines and die-polish but do not detract from the visual merit of the piece at hand, which finds itself as one of just 21 Victorian era Proof Trade Dollars certified by both NGC and PCGS. This particular date shares this rare designation with two other specimens, a PR64 and an impressive PR66, none of which have sold at auction since this piece brought $10,000 hammer in our New York Signature sale of 2009.
