George VI gold Proof "Coronation" Medal 1937 PR62 Ultra Cameo NGC, Eimer-2046a, BHM-4314. 118.89gm. 57mm. By Percy Metcalfe. A spectacular large-format gold coronation medal, produced to a scant mintage of just 274 pieces of this size in total. The expansive planchet depicts a pair of sensitively rendered and frosted portraits of a crowned George and Elizabeth, set atop an endlessly reflective and highly polished backdrop, wholly deserving of the superlative designation, while a minor scattering of light wisps and a subtle scratch to each portrait likely precludes a higher technical grade. Only the third specimen of this size we have handled, the other two, a PR61 in 2018 and a PR63 in January of 2021, selling for $12,000 and $15,600, respectively.
