Philip V gold Cob 8 Escudos 1738 L-N MS62 NGC, Lima mint, KM38.2, Cal-2153, Onza-320 (Rare), Oro Macuquino-321b. 26.97gm. Variety with ANO 738 at end of reverse (obverse as holdered) legend. An impressive dually dated Cob from this seemingly quite elusive year, this being the first representative we have brought to auction since our sale of the Dr. Patrick Tan specimen in 2008 (a mere XF45). Even more impressively, the current offering is both the sole finest yet seen by either major grading service, and the only example yet awarded a Mint State designation--the next finest being an AU53. Exhibiting the bold die polish that so often serves as a trademark of high-grade Cobs of the period, this piece reveals a virtually perfectly centered strike, just the mildest justification towards the right on the obverse (as holdered) allowing for the final digit of the date in the peripheral legend to be discerned without pushing the final 8 in the central field off-flan.
