Elizabeth gold 5 Roubles 1756 AU55 NGC, Red mint, KM-C27.1, Bit-47 (R1), Petrov-30 Rub., Uzd-0088, Sev-213, Diakov-374 (R3). Variety with large letters in legends, and no pellet after BCEPOC. Mintage: 13,000. The first of only two dates for this type, and only the third example that we have handled, with the last in this grade realizing $26,400 as part of our April 2018 CCE sale. An issue that is classically plagued by planchet flaws when it is found with outright post-mint issues, the coin offered herein shows a general lack of such imperfections over the fields, minor handling admittedly existing in line with the grade, though this hardly hampers the piece's natural visual appeal. Strong luster continues to dress both sides, concentrating into a glassy finish along the outer registers and near the protected regions around the devices. This offering further benefits from an essentially centered strike--something not to be taken for granted within this series. At present, one of just 11 examples to be certified between NGC and PCGS, with a mere three pieces grading finer. Sold with COA from the Russian State Historical Museum #3726, which includes an English translation.
