Catherine II gold 10 Roubles 1762-CПБ MS61 NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM-C79.2, Fr-129, Bit-4 (R1), Petrov-40 Rub., Ilyin-25 Rub. Obv. Crowned and draped bust right. Rev. Cross of four crowned shields with date in the angles. A fleeting large gold issue of Catherine II we've had the pleasure of handling every few years, but none so fine. Displaying not a hint of striking weakness, the prominently featured bust, seen with impressive depth, sits atop a warm honeyed-gold planchet revealing scattered wisps while the legends are lit aglow upon illumination. The reverse is even finer than the assigned grade would indicate, with notable Prooflike appearances, deep mirrors, ample die polish, and razor-sharp motifs projecting towards the viewer. Sure to garner interest from quality-minded collectors, as this piece finds itself tied for the finest with two others between both major grading services.
