Scotland
Charles I gold Unit ND (1637-1642) AU55 NGC, Edinburgh mint, Thistle mm, Third Coinage, KM57, S-5531, Burns-pg. 481 (Fig. 1030). 9.93gm. By Nicholas Briot. A coin that wholly testifies to the superiority of milled over hammered coin production as well as to Briot's undeniable engraving skill. Presenting a charming half-length bust of the King that rivaled any contemporary British coinage, the coin at hand makes full use of its broad and regular flan, every detail captured in its full majesty amidst a sea of rolling luster. Light rub that qualifies the grade hardly gives the eye reason to pause, while faint adjustment marks are perhaps the only needed "correction" on this otherwise spectacular piece.
