Philip V gold 8 Escudos 1717 S-M MS63 NGC, Seville mint, KM260, Cal-2289, Cay-9959, Onza-507 (Very Rare). 8-M S-8 type. An absolute powerhouse of a coin--and one that blows the competition so far out of the water that even the most discerning collectors of this Spanish series will take note. At present, only three representatives of the date have been certified: the next finest at NGC ranks a full 5 points lower at an AU58 (sold as part of our April sale #3064, lot 31698), with the next finest at PCGS a paltry VF30. Even the famed Eliasberg Collection did not contain an example of the date. What is even more impressive, however, is the fact that only a single Spanish 8 Escudos of Philip V of any date certifies a point finer. In-hand inspection immediately confirms the offering's certification, the usual flatness atop the devices diagnostic of the series giving way to brilliant, nearly glassy fields when viewed under good light, die polish visible in concentrated areas under a loupe. The centeredness of the strike provides yet further ground for praise, with so many examples of this already fiercely sought type showing highly misaligned dies. All-in-all, a coin befitting of the most elite collection.
