SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny. Ca. 485-465 BC. AR tetradrachm (25mm, 17.58 gm, 12h). NGC AU 4/5 - 5/5. Struck under Hieron I (475-470 BC). Charioteer driving slow quadriga right, kentron in right hand, reins in left; Nike flying right above crowning horses with wreath / ΣVRAKOΣION, compact head of Arethusa right, wearing wide plain taenia and pearl necklace, hair braided at brow, brushed straight with long loop tucked under diadem; surrounded by four dolphins swimming clockwise. HGC 2, 1306 var. (pearl taenia). SNG ANS 72. Boehringer 213. Deep cabinet toning. Exceptionally attractive portrait.
