ARMENIAN KINGDOM. Erato, Sole Reign (ca. AD 13-15). AE octachalkon (24mm, 10.87 gm, 1h). NGC Fine 4/5 - 1/5, smoothing. Artaxata, Regnal Year 3. BA-EPAT, diademed, draped bust of Queen Erato right / E-Γ, aerial view of the city walls of Artaxata, in the shape of an octagon with six tall round defense towers and two gateways. Kovacs 187. Extremely rare. Red and green patina.
This highly interesting and unusual issue was struck during the short sole reign of Queen Erato. Although she ruled jointly in 2 BC-AD 1 with her half-brother husband, Tigranes IV, the length of her sole reign could have been as long as three years (hence the year 3 on the reverse), or less than one year.
