Republic gold 20000 Reis 1899 MS64 NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, KM497, LMB-719, Bentes-613.10. Impressively struck and minimally marked, with flashy, full mint bloom remaining atop frosty surfaces. According to census figures, this date remains one of the most challenging to acquire in certified condition. NGC's census shows a mere two examples certified to date, while adjacent dates currently show 13 (1898) and 27 (1900) certified specimens. By comparison, the 1897 shows over 130 certified to date, despite a mintage figure that is indicated to be only nominally higher than the present offering's in Livro Das Moedas Do Brasil. Of the two 1899's seen by NGC, this specimen is the finest, while PCGS has encountered no other representatives of the issue, rendering this standout offering as a clear target for collectors of the Republic series.
