Zara. French Occupation Siege 18 Francs 40 Centimes (4 Onces) 1813 AU53 NGC, KM3, Dav-47 var., CNI-VIc.3. 119.4gm. Large punch variety (25mm). An instantly recognizable and enigmatic issue, known both for its sheer size as well as the Napoleonic eagle emblazoned across the face, made even more apparent than its "Small Punch" variety counterparts by an almost 50% increase in size. Struck for use in French-held Zara during British-Austrian besiegement and usually encountered in smaller denominations, this large-format issue is quite the survivor, especially for an obsidional issue, having eluded significant damage or even heavy use in circulation typical for these specimens, exhibiting only trivial rub to the high points of the eagle's breast feathers. Having certified the finest for a variety that rarely crossed the auction block, and tied for second finest for the denomination, bested only by a lone AU58 offered in our March sale of the Paramount Collection, this offering is positively worthy of fervent bids.
