Menelik II gold Oval Presentation Medal ND, Gill-M42. 52x43mm. 28.95gm. Comprised of two oval shells joined by a diamond-faceted strip or bezel (thus hollow). An extremely rare gold presentation medal, featuring Menelik II's portrait (after the engraving of Lagrange) on the obverse, and the iconic image of St. George slaying the dragon on the reverse. Though not noted as such by Gill, our research suggests only 5 or so specimens have been reported, with this being just the third example to appear on auction in recent decades. Reportedly purchased by the consignor at the 1979 ANA show in St. Louis, and thus long unavailable to collector.
