Carolingian. Charlemagne (768-814) Denier ND (793-814) MS63 NGC, Melle mint, Class 3, Dep-606 (Charlemagne or Charles the Bald), Kluge-217. 1.74gm. +CARLVS REX FR, cross patteé within inner beaded border / +METVLO around Karolus monogram. An incredibly nice, and comparatively "clean," selection for this classic denier from the most prolific Carolingian mint. Though classically thought to be indeterminable between Charlemagne and his grandson Charles the Bald (as both issued the same type at Melle), Simon Coupland has more recently published an article delineating the attribution of deniers of each ruler, with this matching the characteristics spot on for the former.
