German States
Prussia. Friedrich Wilhelm III white-metal Pattern 2 Taler 1819-A MS62 NGC, Berlin mint, KM-Unl., J-Unl., Thun-Unl., Marienburg-Unl., Olding-Unl., cf. AKS-9 (this Pattern mentioned). A highly intriguing off-metal strike or Pattern, most notably as no 2 Talers were minted under Friedrich Wilhelm III until 1839, and featured a distinctively older bust with longer hair. Interestingly, though appearing to be a concept for a coin that never was, with crisp, finely cut features, notable die rust is visible over both sides, as well as a small die crack around the H in THALER. According to our research, this piece may very well be unique, with both the Wilmersdörffer Collection and the Marienburg not containing a specimen, and only Arnold, Küthmann, and Steinhilber's work, Grosser Deutscher Münzkatalog, citing an example struck in 1819 in tin (possibly this very coin).
