Mughal Empire. Akbar (AH 963-1014 / AD 1556-1605) gold Square Mohur AH 987 (AD 1579/1580) MS62 NGC, Patna mint, KM111.1, Hull-1229, Liddle Type G-22. 10.79gm. A highly coveted type in any state of preservation, much more so on the cusp of choice, with the piece seen here fully showcasing the exemplary quality of Mughal die engraving of the period. A ruler whose gold coinage is already fiercely contested, Akbar's square Mohurs occur with only great infrequency at auction, those which are seen most frequently coming either heavily circulated, or in the form of the later "Temple token" imitations. As such, a superb rarity, and one sure to appeal to even seasoned series collectors.
