James II silver Proof "Gunmoney" Shilling 1690 PR53 NGC, KM100a, S-6582B5 (prev. S-6582DDD), Timmins-4A, Withers-19/15. Dated May 1690. A wonderful example of this early, rare silver Gunmoney Shilling, struck as an emergency issue by James II just a year after landing in Ireland as he attempted to retake the throne of England. Though most of the Gunmoney coinage was produced in a copper alloy, a very small number were struck in other metals, presumably as presentation pieces for Jacobite Mint officials or sympathizers of the cause. This particular rare die pair was struck in both gold and silver with the reverse die seen on one of the May 1690 copper alloy coinages of the period. An enthralling issue possessing just a touch of wear to the portrait which exhibits general striking weakness common to this series; a charming representative nonetheless.
