temp. Charles & Johanna silver Shipwreck Recovery "Tumbaga" Bar of 6 lb 6.7 oz ND, García-Barneche-pg. 111, M-125 (this piece; also illustrated on pg. 1). 290x100mm. 2911.49gm. From the so-called "Tumbaga" shipwreck, wrecked off the coast of Grand Bahama Island c. 1528. Two tax stamps are visible towards either end of the ingot, while two different fineness stamps appear in two rows near the center: the top row displays the "R Code" RC, usually associated with an average fineness of 1150/2400, and the "owner" marking BVo (postulated to refer to Bernardino Vázquez de Tapia); the second row contains the common Caroline for 1500/2400 fineness. A fascinating silver bar type, considered to be the earliest silver ingots from the New World, produced locally by the Conquistadors--who accompanied Cortés--to export booty to Spain. It is also hypothesized that the BVo mark refers to many of the recovered bars belonging to Bernardino Vázquez de Tapia, one of Cortés' captains. This is the first such example we have handled, with most examples have disappeared into private collections after their recovery and conservation in the 1990s.

We note that the weight listed at the beginning of this description is gross weight (lbs. oz.), not fineness (troy lbs. troy oz.)
