South Peru. Republic gold 1/2 Escudo 1838 CUZCO-MS MS65 NGC, Cuzco mint, KM173, Fr-94. An impressive specimen of this one-year small denomination in gold, which almost should not exist so fine. Semi-Prooflike appearances abounding, with perfect centering and a sharpness of strike atypical of contemporary South Peru issues. Blanketed in a full golden resplendence that highlights every painstakingly engraved sun ray, and lightly coated in tangerine patina. The current example is the second-finest between both grading parties, bested only by the Lissner example one point higher and surely will excite the quality-minded collector.
