Victoria gold Proof "Glasgow University Gartmore" Medal 1862-Dated PR62 Cameo NGC, 32.91gm. 42mm. By J. Milton. An intriguing issue almost never encountered in gold, awarded to a David Thomas for the best discourse on political liberty and originally endowed in 1787 by Robert Graham of Gartmore. The large gold Medal depicts a view of the Old College and Liberty with Phrygian cap and wreath in exceedingly high relief that impressively projects towards the viewer against glass-like mirrored fields. A special piece in terms of aesthetics and composition, and, despite allover wisps and a deeper scratch to the reverse, should excite collectors of both architectural and school Medals. Accompanied by the original velvet-lined leather case of issue from John Pinches of London.
