IONIA. Miletos. EL Stater (13.85 gms), ca. 600-550 B.C. NGC Ch F, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5.
SNG Kayhan-440; Weidauer-126; Boston MFA-1882. Obverse: Lion, with head right, reclining left within rectangular frame divided into smaller rectangular compartments; Reverse: Central oblong punch, containing three pellets connected in Λ shape and a fox standing left; around, two square punches containing stellate pattern and head of stag left, respectively. Somewhat weakly struck and a bit doubled on the obverse, this example does exhibit a fair amount of handling, but nevertheless retains solid detail and remains problem free. A VERY RARE and always popular type.
