KYRENAIKA. Kyrene. Time of Ophellas, first reign as Ptolemaic governor, ca. 322-313 B.C. AV Stater (8.61 gms). NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5. Edge Marks.
SNG Cop-1210; Boston MFA-1325; BMC-Unlisted. Obverse: Nike, holding kentron and reins, driving quadriga right; Reverse: Zeus Ammon standing facing slightly left, holding phiale and lotus-tipped scepter; thymiaterion to left, ΠΟΛΙΑΝΘΕΥΣ to right. Despite the noted edge marks--which are rather light--this VERY RARE type presents a well centered strike with great overall detail remaining. The golden-orange nature of the color makes the elements pop, while some very light die rust is noted in the fields, but not at all distracting.
