OCTAVIAN. AR Denarius (3.87 gms), Uncertain Italian mint, possibly Rome, 30-29 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5.
RIC-271; CRI-423; RSC-124. Obverse: Laureate head right; Reverse: Rostral column ornamented with two anchors and six beaks of galleys, and surmounted by a statue of Octavian, with spear and parazonium. Though slightly off-center on each side, this impressive specimen presents an excellent portrait of the emerging emperor. Pleasantly toned, with a flan of good metal that is free from issue and even exhibits hints of brilliance emanating from the protected areas.
