KINGS of MACEDON. Pausanias. Circa 394/3 BC. Fourrée Drachm (13mm, 2.87 g, 7h). Aigai or Pella mint. Horse leaping right / Forepart of lion right. Westermark, Remarks, pl. LXIX, 26; AMNG III/2, 3; HGC 3, 823. Toned, trace deposits, core exposed in areas. Fine. Well centered. Very rare, Westermark noted five in public collections, only six in CoinArchives.

From the BRN Collection. Ex Prue Fitts Collection.

By the time of Pausanias' reign, there was a shortage of silver available for the coinage, so most of the silver coins of his reign were officially produced fourrées (see Westermark p. 306). Of the five examples in CoinArchives, four are fourrée.
