LANCASTER. Henry VI. First reign, 1422-1461. AR Groat (28mm, 3.92 g, 2h). Pinecone-Mascle/[Leaf-?]Trefoil mule. Calais mint; im: cross patonce. Struck 1427-1434. Crowned facing bust within tressure of arches; lis at cusps / Long cross pattée; triple pellets in quarters. Cf. Whitton, Heavy 30g-h/36 (for obv./rev.); cf. North 1461/1485 (same); cf. SCBC 1875/1899 (same). Irregular flan. A few light marks. Lightly toned. VF. Very rare and unusual mule.

Ex I. Buck (Spink 176, 30 November 2005), lot 203, purchased from L. Bennett, September 1997; 1990 Reigate Hoard (Glendining, 9 December 1992), lot 321.

From the Buck sale: "This coin is struck from the same reverse die as a Calais trefoil issue Groat in the Reigate Hoard, lot 338. Silver output at the Calais mint had dwindled to virtually nothing at this period and this very interesting coin may be either a pinecone-mascle/leaf-trefoil or pinecone-mascle/trefoil mule.
