CO, SILVERMITHS. in 9 Lines, About EF. These pieces were struck for the Presidential campaign of 1896, for William Jennings Bryan, and represent the difference in size between a Silver Dollar and the silver bullion equivalent of a Gold Dollar. The market price of silver on Sept. 16th was used for comparison. Bryan fought for monetary reforms as part of his Presidential campaign. He was narrowly defeated in the election by William McKinlay. An interesting piece of USA Political history. Uniface examples are recorded as are hand-inscribed reverse types. Gorham Silver was founded in 1831 by Jabez Gorham and Henry L. Webster, and was well-known for high quality spoons, thimbles, jewellery and other small items. They were the first in America to use a steam-powered drop press. Such was their prowess in manufacturing that even Tiffany & Co. outsourced all it's silverware production to them.
