SASANIAN KINGS. Yazdgird I (399-420 AD). Æ Pashiz (1.82 gm; 17 mm). Obverse, Yazdgird bust to the right, phrase "ShMS", in front of face. Reverse, radiating triads around fire altar with possible attednants. The word ShMS might be a reference to Arabic name ShAMS (Sun). Yazdgird I had friendly relations with all the Arab war loards who were part of the defensive line of desert frontier. In addition, Yazdgird sent his son Bahram (Varhran) V to a loyal Lakhmid Arab court and king "Na'man b. Amra` al-Qays" to be trained. In addition the radiating pattern on the reverse might also be a reference to the Sun.The legend of the Palace of "Khwarnaq" built by Lakmids for Yazdgird I to house Bahram V has been immortalized in the Poems of great Persian Poet Nizami in his book Haft Paykar Khwarnaqnis the Arabicized form of Persian "Khwarna" located a mile far from present city of Najaf in present day Iraq.
