Guatemala
Central American Republic gold 1/2 Escudo 1825 NG-M MS64 NGC, Nueva Guatemala mint, KM5 (this coin plated in the 1993 ed.), Fr-30, Stickney-C99. Extraordinarily handsome to say the least, and a coin which could quite easily be labeled as a "tiny gem" owing to the brilliant luster that drapes its surfaces. Presently exceeded by only a single MS65 in NGC's census, the coin at hand far surpasses the Norweb and Eliasberg examples, while tying the Rudman example we sold in January 2014. Typically an issue beset by unsightly adjustment marks, the present offering has toned these down to a minimum, particularly on the reverse, where they essentially slip into obscuring below the coin's booming mint brilliance. A few small laminations are noted on the obverse for the sake of accuracy, though they are of little visual consequence on the whole.
